What is the "Minimum Wage" in Italy?

What are the pros and cons of a law allowing a sub-group of migrant workers to be legally employed in the US at below minimum wage?

  • This law would allow undocumented immigrants currently in the US to be employed in the US legally at below minimum wage. Thus allowing these immigrants to work and live in the US on a temporary work visa legally. Taxes could be collected from these immigrants and the US government would have proper oversight and knowledge of the status of immigrants in the country. This would also decrease the amount of exploitation faced by undocumented immigrants in the US. Allowing them to work at a wage below current minimum wage standards would also meet the demand for cheap labor in the US. The wage would have to be set at a limit somewhere below current minimum wage at a level consistent with supply/demand but still enough to allow for affordability of basic living conditions. The law would only apply to a certain group of immigrants who would otherwise be in the country illegally. What pros and cons would there be from a law like this?

  • Answer:

Cons - taking jobs away from Americans, Pros I suppose would be keeping the business in this country and hoping the something beneficial would eventually trickle down into the American economy.
