    This might seem like an off-the-wall answer, but I'd say (singer, songwriter, musician, actor) Taylor Swift? <said weakly>.  Not sure if she even comes close, but she's the closest one I can think of, background-wise. I was trying to think of someone whose background includes: popular singer, who can demand and receive $400 a pop for VIP concert tickets composer arranger accomplished musician (can play many instruments) actor director record producer music background stronger than film (yet still achieving mild success) The guy has such a wide variety of talents, it's rare, if not impossible, to find someone comparable.

Based on the way he handles lyrics and nuanced ideas expressed through lyrics, the skill with which Jay Chou manipulates music to tease out the poignancy of love and life, and the audience's reception of his artistry, I'd say the american equivalent is probably either Biggie (hip-hop) or Michael Jackson (Pop). I'm leaning towards Biggie because I'm drawn to JC's music due to the superior lyrics as well as the syncopation. (I'm not a huge Hip-hop aficionado, so I'm basing this analysis/analogy on how my friends have tried to persuade me to listen to Biggie.)

As an individual singer/songwriter, Jay has achieved the kind of phenomenal and lasting popularity that in the West, arguably, only bands have achieved. I'm thinking of the Beatles. If one individual musician has to be named as the "equivalent", I'm leaning towards Michael Jackson. But at the end of the day I think every great musician is truly great because he/she is unique. So why don't we credit their greatness by agreeing to leave the question unanswered?
