How hard is it for a Chinese national to get a tourist visa for Japan?
-
My girlfriend (Chinese) and I (British) want to visit Japan for a short vacation at the end of the year. How difficult would it be to get her a tourist visa? I heard in many cases you must deposit a large sum of money, however, I would be paying and neither of us have a large sum of money lying around. What the best process? Should we give up and choose somewhere else?

Going as part of a tour group simplifies things. This is the easiest and probably cheapest way to get a visa. You will have to stay with the tour group though as they make their profits off selling extra activities and souvenir shopping trips. Going individually, you have to prove the usual things: You have enough money, you are planned the trip properly and know the costs and where you will stay, you are not going to study or work while there, and finally that you will exit the country at the correct time and not overstay. If you can document all four of these things then you'll get the visa no problem. In particular, I'd recommend making an plan of your trip with detailed costings for food, hotels, tarvel, entrance fees and other expenses. Make it as real as possible. This shows how much your trip is going to cost. Show you have this much money in the bank plus some contingency, and you should be OK. In the past, Japan has asked that all tourists show a large sum (I've heard 100,000 RMB) in the bank before travelling. I think this has now been somewhat relaxed but they still require proof of your money and it will need to be a large amount. What I have seen done in China is to simply borrow the money and put it in your back account for 3 months, get the visa, then return the money plus a fee for the service.

The Japanese government requires you use certified travel agencies to apply for the visa. Depending on your situation you may have to freeze money in a bank account till you return. Having your round trip tickets and accommodation booked will help. There are some travel agencies that are willing to fudge the rules a bit and help with getting you the visa. It is mainland China after all. One I know of in particular is in Xidan in Beijing. As there is now conflict over the Senkaku islands, Japanese visas are even more difficult to obtain. Further, while 100K RMB is excessive, Japan is expensive, though delivers more than fair value. Basically it is worth the trip, but it is would be best if you have saved well for it. Financial shock can be a feature of travel there, particularly if you are arriving from China...

My girlfriend and I - same nationalities - were talking about this the other day. She mentioned her friend had tried to apply for the individual visa, as opposed to the group visa, but was rejected on account of her salary and bank savings being too low. It's probably easier for her to join a group and then arrange to leave them when you are there. You can meet up again at the airport before you fly back. I'm not sure how likely they are to go for that though. I have heard of companies that arrange group travel but have no specific tour activities once you are there, but you will maybe have to stay in the same hotel as the group. When my work department visited Japan for our annual conference all the Chinese staff had to apply with a group. They weren't allowed to apply as their own group, they had to do so through a formal tourist agency. However once they were on land they just slipped away from the crowd and didn't have any trouble. I'm not officially endorsing that though!

It is a bit difficult, but certainly possible. I went to Japan with a Chinese national friend and she applied for a visa through a travel agency. It was necessary to provide hotel reservations for the whole trip as well as a copy of my passport. she was not part of any tour group, but I am not certain that she did not have to put up a certain amount of money.
