What kind of spider was it?

What kind of spider just came out of my crate of kiwis?

  • I just opened a crate of kiwis from New Zealand and right on top was a spider about 1" - 2" long and furry. I was amazed because you could barely see it; it was perfectly camouflaged with the kiwi; it's fur was nearly the exact same as that of the Kiwi. I freaked out, kicked the crate over, and smashed the kiwi and the spider. I wish I had taken a picture now but didn't want it jumping around the house. I live in the desert and after looking through a "Spiders of Oregon" book with a bunch of local species that I got when I was younger, not a single one seemed to match. Since it was so well camoflauged, I assume that it lives on kiwi vines and is some type of Kiwi spider that hitched a ride to America from New Zealand (I've heard of banana spiders doing this from Brazil), but I cannot figure out what it was and am very curious. Is there a common type of "kiwi spider" that it might have been? It was not one of the green ones that shows up on a google search for Kiwi spider, it was more brownish.

  • Answer:

The huntsman spider, which is common in NZ, has a habit of making it across the ocean on ships. It is long and brown and furry. Possibly your culprit?
