How should we read Twitter and Facebook's decision to have RSS 'quietly killed' and what does this mean for RSS?

Referring only to apps Twitter and Facebook in relation to RSS. Question inspired by this article: http://www.staynalive.com/2011/05/twitter-and-facebook-both-quietly-kill.html

Answer:
In these matters I am a novice but hope some of the conversation about this happening on Twitter spills over onto Quora. My view is that is sends a signal that RSS while far from dead is being nudged harder by proprietary API's. As someone with limited developer knowledge RSS is one area that I have grasped, even managing to do creative stuff with Yahoo Pipes. For people like me using API's is going to require a steep learning curve. put it very well when said that he wished that "big apps would realise RSS is the essential API for semi-pros"
