Why do criminals in movies write messages using cut outs of different fonts?

  To disguise the identity of the sender by avoiding (1) handwriting and (2) typewriters, both of which produce unique patterns. Handwriting is pretty obvious, but you need to remember that the different manufacturers of typewriters used a variety of typefaces and manufacturing irregularities and wear made it possible to look at a known sample from a typewriter and compare it to a threatening letter, which could lead to the sender. So, the "solution" was to clip letters from newspapers or magazines (being careful to avoid leaving fingerprints). These would be larger letters, which are easier to manipulate that text size and, since you couldn't count on finding every letter you needed in the same advertisements, you'd end up with a variety of sizes and typefaces from different advertisements.
