How does a new writer out of school and not eligible for internships, get a job like writer's assistant/PA/etc.?
-
I was asked for help on this but I didn't work this route. I have a former intern who has prod. assistant experience not writer's asst. She wants to work as writer's assistant, writer's pa and wants to know how to get in the door. Receptionist at a lit agency? She gets the UTA list but I think everyone knows that and it's inundated with job seekers. How does she find entry level/ foot in the door positions when she's out of college and so not eligible for most internships?

Answer:
Get in the door at a talent agency and don't leave until you have a job. It does not have to be a big agency either, my advise would be to pursue a middle size or smaller agency. It's step one in proving your self worth in Hollywood. There might be no pay initially, but I have worked with many people who started as an intern and are now very successful. The journey from bottom up seems to make people more appreciative and well liked.

1. She needs to live in L.A. 2. She needs to make friends (if she wants to work on a comedy, she needs to associate herself/take classes/make friends at Groudlings or UCB. If she wants to be in drama then there are many groups that cater to both drama and comedy (Yahoo TV writers, Jen Grisanti's Friday Night Drinks, etc.). 3. http://www.findfilmwork.com/ -- 10 bucks a month. Get "in" as an office PA then move to writers PA then try and get a writers' assistant job. 4. the agency route works, but I would suggest working at a big agency or management company, get on a TV lit desk as an assistant, then she will hear about openings for writers assistant/script coordinators before they even reach UTA list (UTA list is not a viable means of getting one of these jobs). she can check out my website at http://www.evataylorwrites.com and contact me at evawrites at gmail dot com if she'd like. I am a lawyer/aspiring tv writer in la (i work at an agency) and I have interviewed for a few of these positions in the last several months (writers assistant/script coor jobs).

Talk to your local DGA, in Canada it's the DGC, office and sign up!. It's not that hard getting a job in an entry level pos. In fact it's like any industry. Hit up every production company in your city and keep going back and back and back to them. Event. you'll get the op. and take it. One job leads to another. the DGA has training and intern programs.
