How to add a new table to a data source?

When Excel pulls data from an external source (e.g. - for a pivot table), is the source data ever stored locally?

  • I have a pivot table that sources data from a remote server.  I have since lost access to the data/server. The spreadsheet is abnormally large for its contents so I am wondering (and hoping) if the original data is stored within the file before being filtered and populated in the table.  If so, is it possible to retrieve the data? Thanks for any guidance.

  • Answer:

When you connect to an external data source and use PivotTables, Excel will populate the PivotCache an internal data structure we use to store all the data that you retrieved with that connection. By clearing all the filters from your PivotTable you should get all the data that was initially retrieved. Note: This does not work for OLAP PivotTables (connected to a multidimensional data source) or the new style data Model PivotTables introduced with Excel 2013.
