In what forums can allies to an anti-oppression struggle be critical of that struggle's analysis while remaining allies? (if any)
-
For the question of what is an ally in the sense of this question, it may be useful to take a look at http://whitepriv.blogspot.ca/2010/02/10-ways-to-be-and-ally.html I want to clarify I am not asking if an ally should be publicly taking stances on the analyses of the movements they claim to support - but rather to what extent folks feel it is appropriate for an ally to have critical reflections on the struggles they support. My original example was how does someone opposed to patriarchy negotiate the abolotionist / pro-sex divide in the radical feminist community? In that context I am not asking what a man in support of feminist struggle should say to feminist women about this question, but whether it is possible at all for this person to discuss and clarify his thoughts on the question with other allies, and what kind of spaces we can create to do this in. I might also have asked where a white, occidental person seeking to confront islamophobia can work out their thoughts on the veil and sharia law. Because I know I don't want to help them work that out, but I also know I want them to know what they think about it before they start claiming to be allies.

Answer:
In a forum where they are explicitly asked for their critique by a member of the oppressed group. If someone's life/safety is directly at risk in a way that has not been considered by the group.

No anti-oppression struggle has a single analysis, as your "abolitionist/pro-sex divide in the radical feminist community" demonstrates. So the question is - do you, as an ally, have any business taking sides among the various analyses current in the anti-oppression struggle. In one sense, you cannot avoid "taking sides" insofar as the people and organizations with whom you choose to work will have already tended toward one analysis rather than another. But if you really want to know, "should I be actively promoting my analysis within this anti-oppression struggle," the answer is "probably not." But hell, that's probably true in any situation. Just ask yourself Craig Ferguson's three questions: "Does this need to be said?" "Does this need to be said by me?" "Does this need to be said by me now?" Unless you can answer yes to all three questions, then there's really no reason to open your mouth.
