How does affiliate tracking work for app downloads?

I understrand how traditional affiliate tracking works with pixels, etc. How do companies like TapJoy / MobPartner track installations of downloaded apps through the App Store? Because the user is redirected to an app download page within iOS / Android, how does the actual tracking technology work so TapJoy knows when a user has installed an app, and what publishers to pay? Is there a tracking code placed inside the actual app? What tools could be used to set up a similar tracking technology?
Answer:

There is usually a conversion pixel placed inside the app that is fired when the app is launched. This conversion pixel will talk back to the affiliate server. Usually when a link is clicked, a user's mobile UDID will be stored in the server's click logs. Currently OpenUDID (using the browser's copy and paste clipboard) is a rising alternative. When the app is launched, it will talk back to the network and know which users downloaded the app.

Mobile App Install tracking works by tracking the UDID. UDID is a unique identifier of a certain device however recently due to privacy issues Ad Networks are changing to OpenUDID or Mac Address (Privacy Issue still arrises with this one). So when a user clicks on an AD the UDID is stored and matched with the Ad clicked. Now when an Install happens and user opens the App the UDID is sent back to the Network.
