Deadliest Warrior on Spike?

Is there a more absurd concept than Spike TV's "Deadliest Warrior" show?

  • If you have been fortunate enough to be unaware of the existence of this show, please accept my apologies. In a nutshell, the show brings together "experts" to craft hypothetical mano-a-mano slugfests between warriors from different eras. Typical matchups look like: Teddy Roosevelt vs. Lawrence of Arabia Ivan the Terrible vs. Hernán Cortés Gladiator vs Apache No, I am not making this up. http://www.spike.com/shows/deadliest-warrior/ I would love to hear what Quora's military buffs think of this show.

  • Answer:

Boo to all of you. The facts are that history today is boring. No one cares about history of bridges in Rome, they want to see something guile. What Deadliest warrior does do is bring to light many of the unknown aspects of some great warrior races and individual warriors. Those who like to learn about this stuff, or might one day, get an introductory course in military history while watching an entertaining manner. If you don't like it because it is actually entertaining than oh well, but I will provide these two examples of modern military documentaries. You figure out which one people want to learn from. This one that measures the Spartan warrior and the Samurai: or... This one on the Falklands War: (For griefs sake don't even play them! Just look at the stills and you can see what I mean!)

I consider Deadliest Warrior to be far worse than what John Burgess mentions in his answer, because Deadliest Warrior: Makes a mockery of history. Makes a mockery of science . Ridicules scientific communication. Puts things out of context and negates other factors (same as mocking science I guess). It's still presented like a science show. They have 'experts' who perform 'tests' and get 'data' and 'simulate' scenarios. It's not an innocent show, it's just fucking horrible.

I find that sometimes in regard to historical context they use the popular perception instead of the actual truth. For instance their portrayal of Cortez is not up to date with recent discoveries, and they beef up George Washington's and Cortez's stats. That all being said, I find the show entertaining, and it is fun seeing them test those weapons. I particularly like the third season because they don't just look at the weapons but look at the warriors as a whole.

Spike TV has jumped the shark -- as have Discovery and History Channels. Lacking good ideas, bad ideas start to look good. I can think of a few worse ideas -- Toddlers & Tiaras, for example, or Bridezillas -- but they all inhabit the bottom of the toilet bowl.

Umm, jersey shore.

It actually pretty deep. Some episodes are good. I'm hoping for a Season 4.
