Non-US destinations only.

Answer:
If you think Einstein might've been onto something when he wrote, "Man can find meaning in life, short and perilous as it is, only through devoting himself to society", then you might consider a "volunteer vacation" and go teach some kids to read in Kenya, or save sea turtles on a beach that appeals to you, or participate in a Habitat for Humanity blitz build. There are a number of websites devoted to volunteer vacation opportunities.

I'm going to go ahead and plug Wanderfly: http://www.wanderfly.com. We are a travel inspiration site that helps you discover where you can go based on your budgets and interests. Just put in September, how much you want to spend, and choose a few trip themes (Romance, Outdoors, Beach, etc) and you'll get a nice collection of destinations! There are also some big things happening in the next few days, so check back soon! Otherwise, check out http://www.kayak.com/explore/. You can search by month to find the cheapest flights to many destinations. Granted, the cheapest flights are usually to places that are in off-season, but you could find some great deals (I find a cheap flight to Iceland in June!) As for my list of destinations, I would recommend: New York City - You can't beat NYC in the spring (right now!) or fall, when its at its most pleasant. Central Park is beautiful and even strolling the many neighborhoods is amazing. South America - It's still a little too cold to go to far south (Chile/Argentina are better in October/November), but Peru and Brazil are both pleasant in September, as spring starts rolling in. SE Asia - You might get rained on, but the crowds are lighter and the temperature cooler. Wherever you go, just live it up and have some fun!

If you are bargain hunting you've picked a great time to travel! Luftansa have a special on at the moment for all travel throughout September http://www.lufthansa.com/online/portal/lh/us/specials/booking?l=en&specialid=6761&nodeid=2794765 Given the destinations on offer I'd probably go for Turkey - best time for waether, visa on arrival, beautiful and wonderful country to visit. You could book a Intrepid tour for 21% off currently as part of their 21st birthday sale http://www.intrepidtravel.com/21birthday/homepage Depending on your interests I'd go for the Turkey Active trip for a good mix of history, culture, scenery and activities and it fits your timeframe. If looking for something with less flight time and on a tighter budget and a bit more relaxing then check out Nicaragua. Cheap flights down from the States and some great bargain accommodation on special currently such as http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p296826 Cheap, fun and friendly destination with some great history, nature and culture to explore. Don't miss a Sunday Baseball game for some real opportunities to have fun and meet the local people.

We are going to Spain this September: Ibiza, Mallorca and Barcelona. The holidaymakers are largely gone but it's still warm and the weather (good) is reliable. Many Balearic hotels and agriturismos have a "high season" price for the month of August but the price then drops in September. Other good travel destinations: Sicily, Tuscany, Sardinia, and Bali. We were in Bali last year and the weather was great. I posted all of my Bali recommendations: http://www.mapplr.com/2010/08/12/eat-pray-love-bali-travel-guide/

I will recommend 2 countries and you can either spend the 2 weeks in one country or reduce the options and combine. September is a great time to visit because the kids have gone back to school and there are less tourists. The temperature in the south of France is still really pleasant. UK - London, Oxford, Bath, Belfast, EdinburghFrance - Paris, train to Lyon and either hire a car or take the train to Avignon, Cannes and Nice. It does depend on where you are flying from and if the flight eats into your days.If you wanted to head for Asia, then two weeks would be good in Vietnam or Thailand. It depends on what you want to experience. Hope this helps.

Why of course Munich, Germany !!! Go for the Oktoberfest 2011 even if you are not a beer-drinker and if you are a beer-person, well....last year (2010), visitors to Munich Oktoberfest drank an unprecedented 7 million litres of beer, beating the previous high of 6.94 million litres in 2007. Where were you? And if and when you are done drinking, visit Black Forest and nearby Salzburg, Austria. Do not miss Oktoberfest, It's a party like no other!
