Answer:
Not a marketer myself but it seems that: If you take courses in marketing at a local college. If you read extensively on theories and methods of marketing and take copious notes on what you have read. If you work on a non-profit or small project and begin to build a local reputation as being an effective marketer. If you find a mentor that will guide you into the field and in it when/if you enter it. If you create a detailed plan on how to enter this careerfield and modify/adapt that plan as necessary. It will be likely that you might be able to enter the field without a degree or any prior experience. This is a multi-pronged approach that will allow you determine if marketing is something that you are able to do and will convince others that you are willing to work hard to become successful at doing it.

A friend of mine got a well paid marketing position at a Fortune 1000 company by doing a lot of marketing volunteer work in her free time. She had a low GPA from a mediocre school. Some ideas of positions that can be found on Craigslist: Help a company promote their new sports drink on local campuses Help advertise a nonprofit's charity event by making posters, designing their emails, etc. A good marketer will be able to spin even the lowliest of job positions!

Market yourself well. Personally, my experience is in online marketing where there are a lot of tech terms that can confuse a newbie. You may not have worked in the field before, but before you start talking to potential employers learn everything you can about marketing terminology, especially terms that apply to the position you are applying for. Being able to have an informed conversation will prove that you are interested in the field and have done your homework. When I got my first job (out of college after being a History major) I was told that they were impressed I had done my research and could discuss SEM, SEO etc intelligently even though I had never done either. Also, when entering a new field be willing to take an entry level position.
