-
Every job I've ever had has been programming. I'd like to get better at selling. So I'd like to try a job in sales. How do I go about getting a job in sales, or something like that. I don't care if I don't make a lot of money. I just ant to try something different.

Jump in. Find someone who sells something you'd be willing to put your name on, take a small salary - or better yet a draw (a compact slang term we use to describe a small recurring loan against your future commissions while you get ramped up) - and trade the small salary / draw for larger commissions. This way you won't be a financial liability to your employer, and you'll be motivated to put heavy effort into getting better at what you do. Every company wants to sell more, but they don't all have the budget to add a professional and they, like my organization, have seen a seemingly never-ending parade of "professionals" who demand high salaries and low risk. They forget that there might be someone smart out there who would want to come in and offer them a low risk proposition for the purposes of career development. As far as what to sell, some people say sell what you know...I say that when you're getting started, you should sell what you don't know. It's easier to develop professional selling habits when you can't fall into the comfortable trap of familiar surroundings. It keeps you on your toes and learning, which is the most valuable habit you can develop early on. Do not go more than 20 minutes without talking to a potential prospect. Your coworkers are never going to buy from you. Your iPhone is never going to buy from you. Your friends are never going to buy from you. You can only earn money by talking to people that fit a certain profile, and if you successfully develop this habit - over the rolled eyes and objections of the others on your team - you will never have a problem making money in sales. Keep at it. Every interaction is an opportunity to improve your chances on the ones that come after it. Every approach makes you a better sales person because it forces you to learn the answers to tough questions, and gives you data you'll need to improve your pitch.
