How can I use XMP in Sharepoint metadata?

Sharepoint: why use sharepoint foundation for file storage and sharing when we already use shared/network drives?

  • if you was selling the concept to the CEO in a 5 min pitch and the benefits it offers over shared drives? as sharepoint foundation is in effect just a web based network drive? but with costs?

    If you try to 'sell' SharePoint to the CEO as a simple replacement for file shares, you're going to lose. I would look at how SharePoint can help the business in terms of collaboration, document management, search, workflow, etc. SharePoint does so much more for a business than just storing files. I would think/hope a CXO would be more interested in these benefits.  Migrating documents from the network drives (which are more often than not an unmanageable mess) to a properly developed information architecture in SharePoint goes along as part of the argument though.

If you intend to use SharePoint as a network drive, just don't. Storing content in a database will cost you about 10 times what it would on a shared drive plus it might even be slower. What makes SharePoint interesting is search engine and it's ability to attach custom meta data to a file. Depending on what you want to do with it, it might be a good idea to keep your shared drives and add them as content sources for SharePoint.
