Is Blackberry internet service the same as Blackberry data?

How do I use my BlackBerry without paying a data-plan for internet service?

Some carriers, based on my experience with VZW, might make you purchase a data plan when you buy a smartphone, but I have been able to cancel that part of my service after the initial set up.  Then, if your device supports other wireless systems such as WiFi, you could connect to a public hotspot to get access to the Internet.  This has worked on my Windows Mobile 6.x devices, I am not sure how easy it is to change connections on a BlackBerry.  My phone will default to WiFi (as long as it is on and there is a signal) when I turn off my CDMA/TDMA radio.

In my experience you can do this with GSM phones by just swapping in a sim from a non data phone and turning off data services in the blackberry settings. CDMA carriers however require you to register the phone with them so you cannot get around it.
