What is banner networks?

Do ad networks accept banner ads written in HTML5/CSS?

  • I know there are Static and animated GIF Banners. There also are Flash Banners. But will Web Admins of Ad Platforms and Newspaper Websites accept HTML-Banner Code, too? Or do they do already? If not, what is the best technical Format for Banner Ads?

  • Answer:

It seems the industry is a bit slower to adopt HTML5 than hoped, at least on the video front.  The two ad servers we work with most often are only half-way there at this point - one doesn't offer metrics for HTML5 video, the other doesn't offer flash fallback.  Both of these are deal breakers at this point. As Declan mentioned though, for non-video banners there are many options.  The networks we work with will all allow the use of jQuery, which makes it much easier to create interactivity with javascript. Another option for producing non-flash interactive content is the newly released Hype (Mac only).  You can find it on the Mac App Store. I've also talked to the folks at AdVine, which allows for creation of non-flash (and flash) content for use on ad networks. http://sproutinc.com/solution/advine/

If you were talking mobile ads, then pretty much any ad network will accept html5, since iOS and Android now support it.  Online, that is not yet the case. Since your question covers online ad networks primarily, most will accept HTML 5 ads at least on paper, but browser acceptance is still limited. Browsers that support HTML5, such as Firefox 3.5, Firefox 4.0+,Chrome 5.0+ and Safari 5.0, and the upcoming IE9.  This will limit inventory somewhat, so it depends on the network and its reach as well...and most will encourage you to share advertising that more people can see... Technically the best format for banner ads is what works (technical is important, but the headline and call to action are in some ways even more important to an ad)... Flash is still one of the biggest sources of interactive and entertaining banners, and should be included of course.  Java, Javascript, and DHTML have been used frequently, but once HTML5 is readable in most browsers, it's likely the usage will increase...this is a good technical skill to learn for the future, but in the short term it will likely limit inventory. There is no one technical format that works best, you'll find the simplest solution, as usual, works in banners, which are so often ignored ad space.

Many ad networks now allow you to embed HTML5 banners. Just ask them! It's more common that not! I would argue that the best format for banner ads is HTML5 in conjunction with .gif (or similar) fallback images. HTML5 banners are responsive and therefore can be optimised and viewed on mobile devices, unlike Flash banners that cannot be viewed on most mobile devices. Fallback images are static images of your banner ad that are saved as a still image, e.g. jpeg or gif. This means that if the view of your ad is using an old browser or device your HTML5 banner will be replaced with these still images, so your ad call always be viewed.
