Do car alarms provide a significant reduction in automobile theft?

Automobile Theft: When a stolen car's been recovered, how does the owner get their car back?

  • Especially, when the car is hours away. (Not necessarily Mexico.) Is this the owner's responsibility?

  • Answer:

If the police recover the vehicle, then they will inform you on what procedures you need to undertake to retrieve the stolen vehicle. If you locate the vehicle yourself or hire a private detective to do so, you would still have to notify the police that you have done so. From there they'll investigate the find and when they are finished, they'll release the vehicle If somebody happens to find your vehicle and uses information that is found in the vehicle to locate you, then you still have to contact the police. And possibly your insurer if you have been issued a claims check for the vehicle. If you report a vehicle stolen, when it's discovered (if it's discovered) the police will inform you of what needs to be done to retrieve it. You'll almost certainly have to pay for this out of your own pocket.

The Seattle police gives you the option to impound or not at the time of filing.  The former option means you'd have to pay a fee to the towing company.  The latter would close the report as soon as the vehicle is located, and you are responsible for pickup at the discovered location.
