What is the fastest way to encode a DVD for a quality playback on both the iPad 3 and Apple TV 3?
-
Please list the procedure and settings. I want to maintain the original picture quality, etc but also benefit from the smallest file size possible preferably as near to 1.5 Gb. What file size can I expect for a DVD which has a run-time of approx 1.5 hours. Resource: http://www.pavtube.com/apple-tv-3.html

We at http://DigiRAW.com achieve everything required for a smartphone right up to a home cinema 90" screen.... with just one file. Average movie size 800mb to 1GB and a Blu-ray HD 2.5gb to 3gb.... no noticeable loss in quality and with surround. How did you get on?

There are many programs out there that can help you achieve your goal. The freeware Handbrake is a great choice. If you're seeking for seeking for the best video output quality, fastest video conversion speed and don't mind spending $27.96, https://www.easefab.com/mac-dvd-ripper/ is highly recommended here. I've had a pleasure of using this program these past several months. I've had success in ripping my DVD discs into a format playable by my Apple TV and iPad Air. I've found the quality to be excellent, and see no difference when compared to playing the discs themselves. The Steps: Step 1: Load DVDs movies to the program, and select "Apple TV" or "iPad Mini" from "Apple category as the output format. Step 2: Click "Settings" option to access the setting window. And set the bitrate as 2000~2500. Step 3: Click "Convert" button to start the conversion. After the conversion, just use iTunes to stream the converted DVD files to Apple TV or iPad and enjoy them!

The program I am using is Pavtube DVD Ripper. I recommend this program to you because it provides âApple TV 3 Dolby Digital Pass throughâ profile which exports H.264 video with AC3 5.1 pass through and AAC stereo. Just with one conversion, you can get one movie which best fits for your iPad 3 and Apple TV 3. This is the reason why I choose this program. I have surround devices in my home cinema, the output video with 5.1 pass through really gives me an amazing experience. As for video size, in my experience, the video size is more based on Bitrate than resolution. So to get smaller video size, you can set its bitrate lower. I think 2500 is a nice choice to get about 1.5GB video. http://www.pavtube.com/dvd_ripper/

Most people's first thought upon playing DVD on Apple TV/iPad 3 is to stream/AirPlay/mirror DVD to ATV from Mac or PC, which however has some limits and will be explained later. Some say use VLC media player, which should works but I have never tried it myself. http://www.ifastime.com/stream-dvd-to-apple-tv-4.html or iPad 3 seems to be the ultimate solution, to some extent.

The application I would recommend is called Handbrake. It's not the most user-friendly, but it's free.
