In general I think a good strategy is to: Make yourself known as an expert and lover of what you do – find your specialist subject Contact the people who want to employ you Show your successes and learning online http://acedigitalcomms.wordpress.com/2013/08/07/stand-out-from-the-crowd-three-things-to-do-on-social-media/ about what stepd to take, I hope they help. 1.       Twitter lists to know people Use Google to find the cool people you want to work for and with. For  instance, if you want to go into, say sports marketing and work in Edinburgh,  Google “Sports marketing Edinburgh”.  It’s as easy as that!  Now you’ve found  people who look interesting, find them on Twitter and add them to a https://support.twitter.com/articles/76460-how-to-use-twitter-lists called something like ‘awesome sports marketers’. Check that list every day, see what people are talking about, learn  from them and when (and only when) you have something interesting,  useful or engaging to contribute, get involved in a conversation. This is networking at its easiest. People will begin to be aware of  you and you can create the foundation of relationships instead of the  hard sell of CV-sending. 2.       Online profile How will people know you’re awesome if you don’t show them? Think what would you Google if you were an employer looking for  somebody to do your dream job. Maybe you can write a blog about that  subject. Tell people what you know, what you’ve seen in the news and  display your flair for the subject. How will people know you’re awesome if you don’t tell them? Get in Linkedin and ensure your skills and experience are searchable online. Create an online CV, either like this awesome one by http://lauraemilydunn.tumblr.com/ and this http://cargocollective.com/vivimagic or use a tool like http://vizualize.me/ to make an infographic of your experience. 3.       Clean up your act Make sure your Facebook is set to private if it’s got too much  personal opinion or drunken photos you’d rather an employer wouldn’t  see. Learn from http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-22084426 – go back over your Facebook posts and comments, Tweets, YouTube vids  and comments – anything. Check you’re happy with them. An employer isn’t  going to worry about the picture of you having a drink at the pub but  they won’t want to be associated with a drug-taker, a racist or any  behaviour that will embarrass them.  Nor should you.  Set them to  private or delete any dodgy stuff.

I assume you mean you wish to do marketing for a company that's engaged in social media? If so, then get functional, discipline-level experience in either running campaigns or doing analytics. Seek a position with responsibility for a product line, and gain hands-on experience across a range of go-to-market activities.
