What are the differences between the M.Eng and the MS in engineering?

What are the core differences in career-paths that would be available to me if I pursued a Master's degree such as Stanford's MS&E (http://www.stanford.edu/dept/MSandE/cgi-bin/index.php) or an MSc. in Financial Engineering or a core-specialization, as opposed to an MBA?

  • I have a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering. I see more innovation and entrepreneurial success driven by academic degree-holders today rather than MBAs. Is the appeal of MBAs dwindling? Is MBA-Entrepreneurship correlation not very strong?

  • Answer:

Entrepreneurial success is driven by people who solve problems. Usually, the people the solve problems are the ones who build things. So don't focus on getting another degree, focus on learning how to code and/or design web apps or build physical products that can change the world.

If you want to be an Entrepreneur, it's true that you don't need any of these degrees, especially the one in Financial Engineering. Actually, you don't need a degree and another loan etc... to become an entrepreneur, it could actually be detrimental to your ability to start something after school (because now you have debt to pay back). But if you want to go work for wall street, M.S in Financial Engineering is good! If you want to work as a PM in start up, then MS&E is good, even though I think that if given the opportunity, an MBA from a top 10 school is better career wise.
