How to replace a string inside of a Word Document?

In Word 2010, how can you replace all occurrences of the same picture in a document with a different picture, using one or a few commands?

  • I'm working with Word 2010 and I am using the same picture in several different locations throughout my document.  I want to replace those pictures with another picture.  Is there an easy way to replace all the pictures at once or is it only possible to replace pictures one at a time?

  • Answer:

Work with the XML file format (this obviously only works of the file is .docx / dotx / docm / dotm format, i.e. an office 2010 file and not a previous version running in Word 2010): - Copy the file (just in case something goes wrong). - add ".zip" to the end of the file name (after .docx), or overrwrite the file ending with ".zip" - Windows will warn you that changing the file ending is a bad idea and so on. Yeah, but here it's a good idea. So "OK". - Now you open the newly-created ZIP file, go into the folder called "Word" and then into the folder called "Media" and there you will fond all the images used in that document, listed as individual files. - Replace the image you want to replace, making sure you leave the name the same. It's probably a good idea also to make sure you have the same inage size, etc. but probably isn't necessary. - When you're done, go back and rename the file back to what it was called originally (remove the .zip"). - Open it in Word and you'll see the image is replaced.
