Will native Google Voice integration work with the Sprint iPhone 4 and 4S?
-
On Sprint Android devices, you can natively integrate Google Voice to route calls and texts to and from your phone using your Google Voice number (see: http://google.com/support/voice/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1207074). Will you be able to have your Google Voice number natively integrated with the Sprint iPhone 4 and 4S? With the 4S, if you can natively integrate your Google Voice number, will sending texts using Siri send them with your Google Voice number or the phone's original number (i.e. not your Google Voice number)?

Answer:
I called Sprint Customer Service to ask and here's what they said: Sprint's native Google Voice integration does work with iPhone 4 and 4S, as hypothesized by , and . Since Google Voice parses voicemails through its system, iOS's native will not work on your iPhone. Instead, you will need to access your voicemail either via the , the mobile web interface for Google Voice or by calling the voicemail system. What does this mean? Calls placed from your iPhone's Phone app will show your Google Voice number on the caller id of the person you are calling. When people call your Google Voice number, your iPhone will ring along with any other phone you have configured to ring. Text messages sent from the Messages app when received will be associated with your Google Voice number (Note: is not supported by Google Voice). Text messages sent to your Google Voice number will be received in the Messages app (Note: is not supported by Google Voice). will work seamlessly with your Google Voice number when sending/receiving texts and placing/receiving phone calls. Update: On October 14, 2011, , Senior Software Engineer on the Google Voice Team published a blogpost stating the following: Google Voice users are now able to receive pictures and other multimedia messages from Sprint subscribers. The multimedia attachments will display on their mobile forwarding phone and in their email inbox when they enable text to email forwarding in their Google Voice settings [instructions at http://google.com/support/voice/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=160203%5D. We are also planning on making them display in the Google Voice inbox. The full blogpost can be found at http://googlevoiceblog.blogspot.com/2011/10/first-steps-towards-mms-support.html

There appear to be no technical limitations that would prevent the iPhone from being compatible with Sprint's implementation of Google Voice integration. That said, there could be political or policy issues that would preclude Sprint from provisioning iPhone accounts to integrate with Google Voice. This may especially be true if Google Voice requires certain specific packages from the carrier that aren't available to iPhone users; it's not uncommon on various carriers for iPhone users to have a more limited set of packages to choose from, or not receive all of the usual benefits of the iPhone when choosing a non-iPhone-specific package. Update (Oct 24, 2011): Apple has published a support article that notes that users with Google Voice integration enabled may encounter problems with registration of their phone number for iMessage or FaceTime. See http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4091: Integrating your Sprint account with Google Voice may prevent your mobile phone number from being registered for use with FaceTime video calls and iMessage text messages. This occurs only when your Sprint phone number and Google Voice number are not the same. It should not affect your ability to send or receive SMS or MMS messages, or to receive or place FaceTime calls or iMessages using an email address instead of your phone number.

With Sprints GV integration, the phone knows nothing of Google Voice. Sprint just changes the caller ID and SMS from ID for outgoing calls/texts. Also it sends all incoming sms/calls to the phone like it would a regular call/sms. I see no reason that Siri would be affected

It works for me on the . I transferred my line from a which was previously activated for and it worked right away when I picked up the 4S this morning and activated in-store.

Works well with one BIG caveat. Unfortunately sending/receiving texts to/from SMS short codes will not work as the receiving party will see the message as being from GV not from the sprint number. GV doesn't support short codes. So any type of SMS banking, SMS search, etc will not work.

Integration works great for me on my new 4S! I figured there would be a brief delay on Sprint's end after adding it to GV, but it happened immediately.

My suspicion: Yes, but probably not in the same way that it works on an android phone (which "takes over" the phone via the app). Sprint has a more network based (vs. client side) approach which allows users to swap their sprint number for their google voice number and vice versa so that you have one integrated cloud-based system. Where the rubber will meet the road is on international calling. Sprint loses out on ILDT revenue by giving this up to Google.

Sprint does this with Blackberries and Dumbphones so why not iPhone. It is OS agnostic. That said, Apple could drop the hammer.

The BIG caveat is that when you receive text messages via the iPhone app, they don't show up on your Google Voice account. My favorite part about using Sprint integration with Android is that whenever I send a message it always shows up on my computer as well. Making everything seamless and able to be referenced..
