Does Google picasa store metadata in the pictures?

How can we use Google Drive as the ultimate photo storage/sharing service?

  • Google Drive is great for backing up files, Picasa is great for photo management and sharing, but with over 80GB of photos I don't want all my photos on my hard drive. So far, I've got a good method for backing photos up to Google Drive. I have a master "Pictures" folder which contains all my photos. Then on my smaller laptops (ie: Macbook Air), I'll import a photo album. Then using Google Drive, I will Sync that folder to the cloud and merge it with my master Pictures folder. Google Drive treats the photo files as "files", not photos. I'm looking for a solution to treat the photos as photos, create albums, share, etc. Ideally, I could set Picasa to use my Google Drive Pictures folder as the source (instead of using my hard-drive). The main reason for this need, is that every 2-5 years I'm going to replace my laptop/desktop and Picasa doesn't migrate well from machine to machine and is especially weak at managing albums from multiple machines simultaneously. I feel that Google Drive & Picasa are very close to becoming an awesome "online ONLY" photo management service. I imagine importing photos from my camera(s), uploading immediately, and managing from any device. Thoughts?

Google in their last spring cleaning stated they planned on combining the two. http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/29/3428972/google-spring-cleaning-drive-picasa-storage-consolidation

To revive this older question it could be helpful to mention that Google Photos now gives you unlimited storage for photos and video. https://photos.google.com/ It's honestly one of the coolest things Google's released for a few years. I love it.

I have the exact same challenge. Since having switched to my beloved MacAir for all daily purposes, I do can not have all my pics (200Gb and growing) on my hard drive any more. I would like to keep them all in the cloud, and have synched copies on my MacAir and other computers, including all the meta data (albums, face recognition etc). One of my worries is the google+ integration. What used to be picasaweb only is now forced to be part of google+, with a less photo-centric interface and difficult to control privacy settings. Any one who has the perfect solution for this situation?

Forget Picasa, it's dead to me. Can't manage from multiple machines and the moment you switch machines you're toast. What I'm doing at the moment is uploading photos straight away to Google+ with my settings set to store them at 2048x2048 pixels (this way they don't count towards your Google Drive limit). Once the photos are in Google+ you can easily organize the photos into albums with the web based features Google+ offers. Pretty slick experience. Finally, I also keep a backup of the full resolution photos locally on a shared network drive called "Photos" (creative right?) organized by year. Hope this helps someone!

For my personal needs I created http://www.tinygallery.org google drive app for convenient photo browsing. Its not Picasa of course but enough for me to get access to my photos on the go.

My thought is that Google Drive is still new and Google is pretty good about unifying their services. I couldn't say how much time it will take, but surely this is inevitable. You want this unified with Picasaweb too, I'm guessing.
