How to enable Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb, *.accdb) in Microsoft Azure server?

Do Microsoft Access (mdb) databases have any advantages over Excel or other databases?

  • Well, I just had to install Microsoft Access for the first time since the EPA website had some mdb files that I couldn't open with anything else...

  • Answer:

Absolutely, first and foremost is the ability to access the tables (Sheets in Excel) by multiple users at the same time.  I would suggest looking into some Access courses at http://Lynda.com.  If you need formula functionality then I would stick with Excel for now, doing thing like that in MS Access requires some decent experience.

Use the right tool for the job.  Excel is not a database tool, Excel is a workbook/spreadsheet tool while Access is a relational database tool.  I think when it comes to data handling and data analysis, the two tools should be used in conjunction.  With the PowerPivot features available in Excel (once you install the free add-on), you have the OLAP capabilities of much larger systems.  Access can contain your raw data (up to 2GB per file) and you can build some pretty interesting solutions on the cheap.  But I don't think you should really compare the two, they are like hammer and screwdriver, in a pinch you could use one tool as the other, but they're really designed for two different things.
