In Brazil, which regions are poorest and which are richest and why?

Argentina: Why it is impossible to find a lot of exotic tropical fruits in supermarkets of Buenos Aires although it is very close to Brazil and other equatorial regions? All fruits which are sold there are the same as in the Central Russia.

  • Answer:

They aren't impossible to find, it's more that people don't really have the habit of consuming them. I understand it's frustrating though, coming from a major city in the US where it's easy to find what you're looking for (for a price.) Part of the problem is Brazil and those countries which produce these fruits don't create markets in Argentina. Currently you can get many of the things you're looking for at JUMBO, COTO, Wal-Mart and other international chains. Ecuador exports Bananas, and Brazil exports passion fruit, pineapple and coconut. Also, the food processing industries (especially gelato makers), have all sorts of tropical/exotic fruit flavors which I'm sure come from the tropical parts of South America. The other stuff is considered exotic, therefore expensive, and found in chain stores or Chinatown (in Belgrano).

Supermarkets are for the masses who are not looking for passion fruit. Go to Recoleta and you will find what you want. If not, ask the owner if it is possible to get what you want.
