How do I start an independent computer science research project?

  • I am a sophomore computer science student at a very good public research university. I would like to start an independent computer science research project, and I already have an advisor in mind, as well as a specific research question. Unfortunately, I have never done any sort of research like this and I don't even know how to begin.

  • Answer:

This is simple. Go talk to your potential advisor. Most faculty love smart undergrads with initiative. He/she might tell you your idea won't work, but at least they'll tell you why and are likely to find you a better project.

Other answers

Like Ben said, go talk to the advisor you have in mind. If they like the idea they'll help point you in the right direction because that's what advisors are supposed to do. They are also going to be able to help you access resources you might not otherwise have known about or might not have "permission" to use.
