Startup India: Why can't we all cluster-in and make our own startup ecosystem on the cloud?

  • Its no secret that the startup ecosystem in India is pretty rudimentary. Unlike the valley, we don't have a support system necessary for startups, present at a particular geographic location in India. Most of the support system that startups need is intellectual. Eg- finding great people, mentors, a brave VC culture, yadi yada. Getting great people in the same place is what we majorly lack in our country, so, why can't we together build our own resources bottom up online? Like an innovative Startup ecosystem in the cloud. Check http://StartupCluster.in How is this is gonna work: -free for all. Open to anyone interested. something like Wikipedia, Quora, where everybody pitch as and when comfortable, without any monetary incentive. -None of us have to devote a lot of time. We can all just share the work l'il by l'il as convenient to us.Something like a crowd sourced software.   -None of us have to spend money to maintain this, we can use free tools such as word press ,quora, discussion forums, meetup, etc etc customize them for our need and link them all together at our base website http://startupcluster.in **I refer to tools: as any page/service that solves one of our pain points as startups. Read on. What all can we build here: -most importantly we can build a healthy culture of passionate individuals who want to make an impact. -we can build a tool to discover great people, I've actually built a prototype of this one http://startcluster.wordpress.com/tool1/ -we can build a tool for mentorship, those who have some experience can advice others on this page. -we can build tools to "test your prospective employee" online, like  we can have a crowd sourcing of test material and build methods to evaluate them. -We can expand to getting funded tools, etc etc These are just few ideas from the top of my head, there can be tonnes more. We can discuss them together, share the effort and build them all for ourselves. To know more log on to http://StartupCluster.com What do you think about such an ecosystem? And what all tools would you suggest to be built?

  • Answer:

I think this is a great initiative however, from what I've noticed, the problem in India is slightly deeper. Various issues exist and one major issue is that there are multiple fragmented and decentralized resources that some people dont even know about. Instead of having a wordpress blog where posts will eventually die down and users will dwindle, a better approach would be to create a resource that centralizes all the different initiatives already in place (incubators, accelerators such as The Hatch in Gurgaon, Indian Inst. of Entrepreneurs etc). Even though the above idea is excellent and no doubt a great cause, I do think forming another wordpress or another mentoring-site would make it just one out of the many resources already available but not known/not contributed towards.

I think for many things is not important... -- what is important is good (i.e. clear) , a culture of and . I feel these are often lacking -- especially in + ventures. The way I see it, the most fundamental basis for trust online is publishing on your own . I simply do not trust someone on the basis that he/she has a gmail or similar . Anyone who uses other people's domains that way is not trustworthy in my book. Likewise, if someone does not have valid contact details, then they are not open and transparent -- again undermining trust. These are very simple things, but they are also fundamental for building strong .

Incubators and accelerators do exactly that !!! They have a panel of mentors and partnerships which startups can leverage. Any good accelerator and incubator makes it easier for startups to access resources.

I loved the idea but it needs more planning and a great team. I have a blog too and i try to get people attention to as many cool startups as possible but there are a lot that don't even get noticed and hence eventually die out. I would love to be a part of it. Let's talk more about it.

Your vision is good but this thing is gonna be very complicated .... Instead of this lets all start our startups individually for whatevr idea we have and make a community where we can show our startups and whosoever needs whosoever can contact that person....

Great idea. I'd be happy to offer pro bono legal advise for startups if you do put in place such a set up.
