What are the good websites for professional Networking?

What are some social networking websites that have good blogs?

  • I'm looking for examples of social networking sites (including professional networking and dating sites -- OKCupid has a great blog, for example).  I'm interested in blogs that do a good job of informing users how to use the site and stimulating users' engagement with each other.

  • Answer:

I'm unsure if Soundcloud counts as a social networking site, but the Soundcloud blog (http://blog.soundcloud.com) does a good job of celebrating its community and showing off the different ways in which people use the product. I'm finding it surprisingly difficult to come up with other examples. You would think that every social networking site would have a great blog strategy, but I checked the blogs of MMORPGs (World of Warcraft, EVE Online), other dating sites (eHarmony, Grouper) and professional networks (HighTable) and that doesn't seem to be the case. There's a real opportunity for a social network to do something really interesting here. This is what it could look like: 1) Broadcasting stats and data about the community: OkTrends (http://blog.okcupid.com) continues to do a great job of holding a mirror to its community. The data often isn't actionable, but people are fascinated by the insight. They keep coming back for more because they enjoy having a bird's-eye view of what's happening on a community-wide scale. 2) Writing and linking to articles about topics that the community cares about: Yesware makes products for salespeople. Their blog (http://yesware.com/blog) is a good mix between posts that explain how to use the product, and useful sales tips and resources, effectively turning their comments section into a watercooler hang-out for salespeople. 3) Spotlight on best practices: Gumroad's "Gumroad Stories" series (example: http://blog.gumroad.com/post/25181366561/gumroad-stories-csshat) accomplishes two things. They introduce members of the community to each other. By sharing success stories, they educate other Gumroaders about how to get the most value from the product. Other blogs that do a good job of educating users and positioning themselves as a useful source of information: Yipit (http://blog.yipit.com): provides insight into the state of the daily deals industry, They also spotlight the best deals happening right now. Elastic (http://elasticsales.com/blog): "Sales-as-a-Service" company blogging about sales tips http://Customer.io (http://customer.io/blog): blog about user engagement, retention and email etiqutte

Thanks for the mention, Emmanuel. I really like the Kickstarter and Evernote blogs. Kickstarter just posted the first in a series of case studies: http://www.kickstarter.com/blog/case-study-cards-against-humanity

This isn't quite what you're looking for but I think you'll find the Hubspot blog really useful.  http://blog.hubspot.com/ It's my favourite blog and regularly has posts about all the different social networks with tips on how to (and how not to) use them and regularly features case studies from all different industries.  I certainly think it would be worth a look (and no, I'm not affiliated with them, just an adoring fan!)
