Alpinestars bionic neck support 2 or leatt adventure?

Do MotoGP (or any similar) riders typically wear neck support devices to help reduce cervical spine injuries in the event of a crash?

  • I'm curious if racers tend to wear safety gear like the Alpinestars Bionic Neck Support system, as I recently suffered a neck fracture from a lowside fall, and I was not wearing such a device, nor was I very aware of them - they don't come up very often when talking about safety gear. (BTW, I'm doing well and 98% recovered - back on the bike even!)

  • Answer:

First off, I'm real sorry to hear about your injury. I hope you make a full recovery quickly. Obviously, racers wear slightly different gear based on their sponsors, but as I understand it they are all wearing cervical protectors as a part of their spinal protection. Some vendors, like Dainese, also offer additional protection through their cervical airbags. Race protection seems to focus on maximizing all forms of body armor due to the unbelievable riding conditions racers experience. Even those street riders who are safety focused don't necessarily think of all such forms of protection, like cervical, chest, hip and other forms of protection.
