Why do some videos on Socialcam appear to be embedded YouTube videos?
-
Were these videos taken with the Socialcam iPhone App? How does a user add a YouTube video to Socialcam? Here is an example of what I am talking about: http://socialcam.com/v/N7ZU8LC6 - If you click on the user's name who uploaded it, you will not see it in his list of uploaded videos. Socialcam is getting most of their growth from automatically defaulting usersâ settings to display all their actions in their Facebook newsfeed (whether they watched a video, liked a video, or commented on a video). Iâve noticed that most of these videos werenât uploaded using the Socialcam mobile app, however. Most of them are YouTube videos that are embedded on the Socialcam site. I havenât been able to figure out how to add these myself, so I am wondering if Socialcam is just importing a bunch of YouTube videos and giving them more sensational titles to drive growth.

Ok the answer to the question "Why do some videos on Socialcam appear to be embedded YouTube videos?" is because they are. Here is TheNextWeb's story on it, which links to this Quora post: http://thenextweb.com/insider/2012/05/10/socialcam-is-pumping-popular-youtube-videos-into-its-app-to-drive-usage-smart-or-seedy/ Here is my Twitter conversation with the Socialcam community manager: http://www.loganabbott.com/post/22678504530/why-do-some-videos-on-socialcam-appear-to-be-embedded ... She basically brushes it off and says that claiming that Socialcam is trying to pass of videos that are old YouTube videos as their own by having "Recorded with Socialcam" in the description is just 'my opinion'. It looks like Socialcam basically imported hundreds of thousands of YouTube videos, added "Recorded with Socialcam" to the meta description that gets shared incessantly on Facebook, and changed the "record" date to a very recent one even though many of these videos are several years old. I've also noticed that my "Social is off" setting mysteriously gets switched back to "on" quite frequently without me touching it. These are questionable viral marketing tactics in my opinion. As you can see, it clearly states that this video was uploaded to Socialcam. Thereâs only one problem, thereâs no way to upload YouTube videos to Socialcam, as it only pulls videos from your iOS deviceâs camera roll or live from your camera. Once you do that, itâs then plastered onto your Facebook Timeline and Newsfeed, and so on and so on. This type of manufactured virality was obviously well researched and tested, because it has clearly accelerated the growth of the service itself. But the obviously weird part is that the video that Socialcam said was uploaded just a few days ago is over 2 years old, and even includes the exact same title as its YouTube counterpart (down to the lowercase i)
