Tumblr: How do you choose between Reblogging a post or Liking a post?
-
It seems like Reblogging receives more exposure as it pushes the content to your friends/followers, so I guess I'm partly wondering what the advantage is in Liking a post rather than Reblogging it. Should I even consider Liking *and* Reblogging?

Answer:
In liking a post, you are showing support to the original poster. It is an interpersonal signal that you appreciate their content, and also a way of telling them that you would like more content of a similar nature. Reblogging is different. A reblog says, "I like your post so much that I am going to re-post it on my own blog". While it is still a show support to the original creator, it is also a broader signal that you think the content would be of interest or important to your readers. You are expanding the audience of the post, and showing an even stronger level of support than a regular like. An interesting note is that likes are optionally public. You can have them auto-updated on your blog, and any individual likes for a user can be found at http://tumblr.com/liked/by/USERNAME, where USERNAME is the first piece of that user's Tumbr blog url. In that respect, they are also a fairly broad show of support, although still with far less reach when compared to a reblog.

Andrew's definitely got the right start, but there's also a slightly more subtle point to liking vs rebloggingâ if your blog has a particular aesthetic or format it might not make sense to reblog something you like no matter how much you like it.

If your blog has a particular format such as a tattoo blog, a specific band blog, a fandom blog or an aesthetic blog and you're trying to stick to this then generally reblog things that fit with that theme. If your blog has no specific theme then reblog whatever you feel like. Generally, I reblog things that I like and then like things that I particularly want to see again and save for later. If you're considering liking/reblogging an artist's work, don't just like it. They need to get their art circulated so it's always nice to reblog and add some comments in the tags.
