How to check if a web page loads?

What's the best way to check on Mac OS X how a Web page looks in Internet Explorer running on Windows?

  • I've looked at some of the Firefox add-ons that attempt to render a page as IE does, but the reviews aren't very helpful, so I'm hoping to hear an opinion from a Web developer with experience on the matter.

The "best" way depends on how much memory your machine has, and how much patience you have. At this point, I have 4GB of memory and have set up several virtual machines using VirtualBox, one each for a combination of MSIE{6,7,8,9} and other browsers. Microsoft even helps a bit by providing time-limited VM images of Windows paired with versions of IE: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=21eabb90-958f-4b64-b5f1-73d0a413c8ef

Running a virtual machine with VirtualBox is the best way I have found to test websites on multiple versions of Internet Explorer with Mac OS X: http://blog.openviewpartners.com/internet-explorer-mac-os-x/

VirtualBox works pretty well, but can be choppy. Eventually we bought a cheap ($200) Asus Eee PC because it was worth the time saved. Plug it into your network, wake it up with a ping, and remote desktop in.

I second Virtualbox. Having images for IE 8,9,10 and 11 take up a lot if hard drive space though. http://Browserstack.com is great too and it gives you more windows browsers than just IE.
