What are the 5 levels of sleep?

If all the humanity on Earth are put into a deep sleep, how long would it take to get back to the CO2 levels and climate of 100 years ago?

  • The ideal range of CO2 levels would be 335 ppm. Not the realistic solution for climate change, but since the global warming has been caused mostly by the human, it may be interesting to try thinking about.

  • Answer:

The increase in carbon dioxide is not caused directly by humans breathing but by our use of fossil fuels to generate electricity and run our cars. You would need a lot of electrically powered  life support systems to keep everyone alive but deeply asleep (probably using as more electricity than when they were awake) and they will still be breathing out CO2 so I think sleeping would not help.

Based on this graph: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:65_Myr_Climate_Change.png And the estimates from http://350.org that put us 30 years from the point where we melt Antarctica.   According to the paper there, even if we stop producing CO2 the temperature will continue to go up due to  the oceans slowing down the process.  As far as I can tell, they think we are appropriately at the upper left corner of the blue box on the graph, once the temperature catches up with the CO2 emissions. I estimate that it would take about 10 million years to return to a lower CO2 level, based on the past time period to get from the upper left corner of the blue box to today.   Personally, I would rather that we went the other way, to get to Eocene conditions.
