Do I want to invest in commodities?

How does a person living in France invest across all asset classes in financial markets in the UK, the US, India, etc.?

  • I live in France but I want to invest my money on long term basis in stocks, bonds, commodities, etc. in the markets US, the UK and India. I do not want to restrict my investments to mutual funds. Is this possible? And if yes then how do I do it...through my French bank, through a broker in France?

  • Answer:

It is possible to invest in the UK and US from abroad, but for India it is not possible due to restrictions on overseas investors. You could try the following brokers in France - Internaxx http://www.internaxx.lu/ and Optionsxpress - https://account.optionsxpress.co... Ask their customer support for further clarifications.

To add to Balaji Viswanathan's answer, if your French broker can buy stocks traded on US exchanges, you can buy Exchange Traded Funds which limit themselves to individual countries - including India.  Alternately the French exchange may have French versions of stocks traded on other countries' exchanges.  US exchanges have these.  I'm sorry that I don't know French exchange specifics, but maybe these analogies will help in your discussions with a French stock broker. Another idea.  Have you tried using one of the US electronic brokerages?  I started by opening an account on-line and then transferring money electronically from my bank to my account. Unless French law prohibits this, it could be a way to invest in every market and just about every kind of asset. Caveat:  The old joke is that anyone can make a small fortune on Wall Street - if they start with a large fortune.  Over the last decade, it has taken a lot of time and research to avoid losing money on stocks.  If you don't have the time and interest, you may be better off keeping your money at home.
