If you have 100 keyword-rich URL's for a certain niche-market but can build only one page of content for each, do you post the content on each URL, or to a corresponding subfolder on one master site, then 301 each URL to its corresponding subfolder?
-
So, would "http://greatkeywordphrase.com" on its own be likely to generate more or less traffic with one page of keyword-relevant content than 301 redirecting it to "http://mainsite.com/greatkeywordphrase" with same page of content in the subfolder?

Answer:
Why not build multiple "complete" sites that all feed into and build up each other?

No. Don't waste your time or money. Increase one site's domain trust and authority, the other tactic is blackhat and Google is amazing at picking up link farms now. Christian Hunter Said: "Thank you Ben for the answer. It was naive of me to not consider any negative implications w/ respect to perception. I appreciate you raising the issue, and will press my luck in asking you what you'd do if you already owned said domains? I have about 140 of them and would like to leverage each of their unique keywords with relavent content, then either make money from their advertising as a hedge against our same-market exposure, or use to refer traffic to our primary domain in the space. Your additional input would be greatly appreciated..." RE Christian's Comment: How long do you want to have the site's up for? To scale your efforts would have to use Black Hat scripts to automate content creation, backlinking and interlinking. However Google - even in the past few weeks - has gotten alot better at finding link farms, auto generated content, and auto generated interlinking. As a test I purchased about 21 longtail domain names that are keyword rich for example: "http://bestseocompanylasvegas.org" and backlinked them to my site. The one I just mentioned has original handwritten text and ranks page three, with no backlinks. The others have the same text as the first and were made a couple of weeks later. They rank poorly for their keywords, do to duplicate content. These domains are used merely as a refferal site, ie someone sees it and they go to my main site quickly. This is a problem for those sites because it will make a high bounce rate. Google now has user metrics such as bounce rate as a ranking metric. If I wanted to increase my user metrics such as time on site, or decrease bounce rate I'd have to add more content, taking away from the time I'd want to focus on ranking my main site. If I wanted to get "backlinks" by just linking my sites to one another Google will penalize them, seeing them as a link farm. Google can use your whois records to determine all of the sites belong to one person. So now I'd be stuck making original content for 21 sites, and having to get them all their own backlinks. If you want to rank your sites, you have to use them in a blackhat mannor. If you use black hat techniques you will get banned, the only question is when. So, if you are ok with having sites rank well for a few weeks and then be unusable go black hat. If you have enough time to add content and build backlinks to all of the sites in a white hat mannor do that. If you choose blackhat: http://blackhatworld.com If you choose whitehat: http://SEOMoz.org Setting up these site and seeing how they performed has been an eye opener for me, I would advise you,if you already have the domains, to setup a few and see what happens with your analytics data. If you already own the domains I'd try selling off a bunch them.

Totally agree with Ben, I would only add that another suggestion would be to build some sort of resource bank with all the terms. BUT, make it logical and extremely user friendly. For example, for the term you really want to rank for that is probably well out of reach now put that directly on your main site's navigation. Then, create a sitemap of the remaining terms where they all build to one another and then level by level to the main term. For example, if your site is selling school supplies you should have the term "school supplies" on your site's navigation. Then, when people click on that it takes them to an incredibly resourceful page with awesome content and types of school supplies (which are likely your 2nd tier keywords). Those links also land the user on incredibly useful pages with maybe resource links or webinars or defintions (or all of that and then some!) You just keep doing this until all your keywords are built out on their own pages but in a logical and helpful way. This does a lot of things: 1) It provides an awesome landing page for you to direct people to down the road. If each page has top shelf content and resources, the chances are high that you can find ways to logically link to that individual page. Keep that future use in mind when you write the copy though - purely promotional copy won't make sense down the road. 2) It will provide an amazing on-site experience for your visitors and potential clients, which will increase your time and site and more than likely, your convernsions. 3) If and when Google gives your site a "second look" you will stand up to scrutiny. Again, this isn't just a pyramid of pages linking to one another - if each page is top shelf quality and makes sense in relation to one another you are going to be fine. Of course, most sites aren't going to do this because it costs money and will take a lot of time to build such a powerful user experience. BUT - if you do, then you won't have to stress too much when another update comes around.
