What kind of salary one can expect in India after graduating from top school in U.S. and have altogether 5 years of experience working across startups and very well known tech companies in U.S.?.

Unfortunately, current company I work with doesn't have an Indian office. Also, is it advisable to look for opportunities while you are in U.S. or move back to India and then look? Does anyone have gone through the same experience? More details: Worked in different capacities, tech lead, architect and some what recognized in tech industry here.

Answer:
For the kind of academic and work profile you have, there are plenty of core-software jobs in India which are at par with thier US counterparts, may be not so much in salary wise but the kind of work and techno-competency and relative lifestyle you enjoy here will be similar, added much more savings. Working in services companies (like TCS, Wipro, Infy, Accenture) is not suggestable though they are awesome companies, for two reasons a. USP of these companies are prospects of client side roles, which I am sure you are not into too much as of now b. The amount of technical competencies you have accumulated in your masters and beyond, would be ideally best put to use in a core Product development or a prodct startup. (my opinion) Since salary is a major concern, startups wouldn't be the best recommendation here. So it all boils down to companies like Google, Microsoft IDC, IBM Research Labs (IRL) or IBM Software Labs(ISL), Yahoo, Amazon, Oracle IDC, Adobe, eBay, NetApp, Thoughtworks etc. If you manage to get a decent job in one of these you can easily get upto 36,000 USD (or Approx INR ~20,00,000/- PA) .

Cutting it short, package what you get with 5 yrs experience and masters from US will fetch you around 15-20 lac in product companies which many people have already listed. If you are really passionate about consulting then joining Wipro, Infosys and TCS is not a bad option...

I & my husband moved back to India last year. Both of us worked for tech firms earning decent salaries in the US. Although, we did not explore the job market much, as we had different goals, from what we have experienced and gathered, for the same jobs in India, the salary levels are much lower (as expected). But, the cost to maintain the same standard of living is almost at par as the US. Living in a big city like Delhi/ Bangalore, with a annual salary of 15-20 lacs (USD $30-40K), you cannot maintain the same lifestyle as you have in the US. Eating out, shopping, travel in India are much more expensive. Good living options for the same rent, are difficult to find. Its good to have a realistic picture of the expenses and salary standards before making the move.

Continue your US job. Put your resume on naukri/monsterindia/timesjob etc. You will start getting calls from recruiters. Tell them you are visiting India soon. Clear some phone screens. Schedule the face-2-face interviews. Take a month long vacation (unpaid if necessary) and attend the interviews in India. Indian hiring managers will take you more seriously if you are physically here for the face-2-face. Get offers, negotiate and move if you like their offer.

Get an offer at Google/Amazon/Microsoft and move back to their India office. Try to negotiate on stocks and compromise on salary because when you shift back your salary will change to the Indian standard but the stocks stay the same. There is always an option to start/join a startup in India.

You can look for US openings in companies like TCS, Infosys, Cognizant etc which have offices in India as well as in US. You can work with them in US for some time and then can ask a transfer to India location. I would suggest you discuss it before joining them. There are companies in India who are hiring India staff from US locations. They conduct interviews in US locations as well. I recently heard of Samsung India doing this. You can register yourself on India job portals and I am sure you will get good opportunities. Good luck!
