What are some good camping spots throughout New York?

What are the best routes for a 7-day trip starting and finishing in New York City in October? How does it change if the trip would be 14 days long?

  • After spending the summer in New York City I would like to travel a bit around the area before coming back home to Europe. I would like to get an overview of what is worth seeing and what the optimal length of such a trip is (in particular, it doesn't have to be exactly 7 or 14 days - all suggestions welcomed). Some additional details: I will probably see some places around New York City on weekends, while staying in there. I have a driving license and I imagine a car to be my primary way of transport but I do not mind also travelling by bus/train. I do not mind visitting tourist places but my primary goal is to see some amazing spots and have a great time. I am into photography, so great photo opportunities are a welcomed bonus during the trip. I will most likely do the trip alone or with 1 other person. The answers to the following follow-up questions would be appreciated too: What would be the best car to rent for such a trip? What is the best way to spend nights during such a trip? Are camping places easy to find? Is it better to try to search for affordable motels/hotels? More or less, what is the expected price range (or daily budget)? I do not need luxuries but would do with a bed and a warm shower.

So many options but my favorite would be to head north.  Spend a night or two in Burlington, do some hiking in the green mountains above (after a summer in the city you'll be ready for this). Next day drive to Montreal and spend two days there. Awesome city with a bike share program that makes it easy to explore. If you're not into hiking skip the first part, drive straight to Montreal and then afterwards continue on to Quebec city. As a European  you will most likely love this part of the world that seems to naturally fuse the best of Europe and America. follow up questions answered: Any cheap car will do Camping above Burlington is highly recommended. Look for info on the long trail. It passes right through there. Climb Mt Mansfield on the trail for one of the best views on earth across Lake Champlaign. Make sure it's a clear day and go prepared as it's an all day adventure (or overnight if you prefer, there's good shelters all along that trail every couple of miles). There's a cool HI hostel in Montreal that arranges pub crawls with a couple young local guides, has live bands playing in the bar in the basement. It's cheap too, perfect really. You can find it on http://hihostels.com, it's near the hockey stadium.

If you head south you can visit D.C., Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, North Carolina coast and circle back inland thru Raleigh to cross the Appalachians thru West Virginia toward Pittsburgh then head back East (Don't miss the Falling Water house east of Pittsburgh) to Philadelphia. This route has lots of scenery and history. With time to look around it could take 14 days.
