The Bible, the beginning of everything in this area is the Joe Dante Schlitz Beer Movie Orgy which toured college campuses 1968-1970. () Without permission from anyone, this college student went through 20 years of TV, TV commercials, public service announcements, political propaganda, and B-movies to find the most politically incorrect, embarrassingly self-revelatory period pieces. He chopped up all the best pieces and was the first to make an entire movie exclusively of ironic juxtaposition. Before Jerry Bruckheimer discovered short attention spans and rapid edits, before Luc Besson made The 5th Element consisting of all edits with ironic juxtaposition, Jo Trento invented the genre and executed for 7 hours. No complete copy of this movie exists. This is like saying that without Steven Spielberg rescuing an old print of Lawrence of Arabia, the film would have been lost. On Friday April 25,2008 a 4 hour version was shown by Joe Dante at a classic movie theater in Los Angeles and it produced the first standing ovation. Think how good this completely illegal film must have been for Schlitz beer to have become its official sponsor. This movie toured the way the Rolling Stones toured. It was projected 50 feet wide on the side of University buildings to thousands of college students who never stopped laughing and applauding. The Movie Orgy had a cathartic efffect. It was a time of great polarization and this movie punctured every inflated balloon that needed puncturing. I remember in particular Ann Margaret making a tearful plea for Vietnam War Bonds/ John Wayne machine gunning commies in The Green Berets. I watched all 7 hours each day it showed. One of the great regret of my life is I did not quit whatever I was studying and spend all my time making movies in exactly this pop culture remix fashion.I became a propagandist for this style of movie. I told everyone at SDS and the Anti-War movement that this was the way to reach college students. Not having the financial resources I decided to start 12 hour movie orgies every weekend consisting of ironic juxtaposition of the most outrageous bombastic films. The original intent was political, what I learned from the Movie Orgy is that it is more effective to expose THEIR side than hit people over the head with MY side.I ended up making a ton of money. This movie at the time had more impact than Woodstock. In the Wikipedia entry for Joe Dante, it is not even mentioned. The movie itself does have a Wikipedia entry.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Movie_Orgy The best place for this kind of pop-culture remix is Japan, where they have the same ingredients as Joe Dante: a total disregard for copyright, a Quentin Tarantino memory for movie trivia, fearlessly going into taboo areas, and a tradition of mixing Manga with live action movies.
