What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in various parts of San Mateo County?

• I'm seriously considering moving to San Mateo County -- trying to figure out where to look.  I generally dislike children, and thus wouldn't want to be in Palo Alto as much, and also need to be in San Mateo vs. Santa Clara County (otherwise, Mountain View would be ideal).  I'd like easy access to 101 or 280, and would like a nice detached house, although my budget is more in the $2500-4500/mo range vs. the $10k+/mo I'd really like.

  San Mateo county is where new families flock, primarily for schools and proximity to both SF and SJ. That said, you might try downtown San Mateo. Pretty solid nightlife and food scene. Not a ton of families since it's the most urban area in the vicinity. Still a transition neighborhood in a lot of ways. You should seriously consider Mountain View. Pretty big mix of single professionals and families. For your price range, you'll be in the condo/townhome/small SFH range.
