Choosing the best set of keywords?

How do I regain manual control of max CPC for keywords? I've taken over an AdWords account someone else set up and no matter how I try to restrict max CPC to my settings it keeps going up on certain keywords.

  • I have set all keyword manual bids to auto (Ad Group default), and have set Campaign settings to "Focus on clicks, manual maximum CPC bidding". What am I missing? Why are automatic increases of keyword max bids kicking in?

  • Answer:

Sounds like there might be some automatic rules setup.  Have a look under the Automate tab on your campaign:

Check you change history - its a link on the right kind of under the drop-down day range. There you can see what is changing and why. If it is automated rules it will say it there as well.

Also check your Bid Adjustment settings for the Campaign. Quite possibly there's a percentage increase in bids for certain day/times.
