Where can I find weekly albums sales?

Is there a site where I can find total record sales for past albums?

  • For example: I'm a Hip-Hop fan and want to find out what were the record sales of Common's 1994 album "Resurrection".

  • Answer:

Record sales in the U.S. are tracked by Nielsen SoundScan. More info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nielsen_SoundScan This is not an exact count, as SoundScan samples cash register data from a limited number of stores and digital outlets and then applies a weighting scale to that data to come up with its figures. Previously, Billboard tracked sales by calling stores across the U.S. and asking about sales - a method that was inherently error-prone and open to outright fraud SS is a subscription-only service primarily used by people who work in the music business. Billboard publishes music charts on a weekly basis which use SoundScan data, but do not give sales figures.

http://fanofmusic.free.fr/index.php?m=Charts&s=BestSellers&p=BestSellersWorldActs is a good place to start. The site provides album-by-album (and within that, sometimes even country-by-country) breakdowns of the total album sales of over a hundred of the most successful recording artists since the 1950's. They even provide sales estimates for some bootleg recordings, as well. It should be noted, though, that their sales estimates are by no means official or authoritative and have not been updated since 2011.
