How does Location Labs get live location data of mobile phone users from the telecom operators?

  • I'm assuming telecom operators don't just give out location data for every mobile number in a live stream feed. So how exactly does this work? Does location labs query for specific phone numbers at an instant in time? But wouldn't that (cellphone number + location) raise privacy issues?

  • Answer:

    We have long-standing partnerships with the mobile carriers and can query for location in real time.   Before that happens, there are a number of privacy protections. Among them:   1) All applications must be approved for commercial launch. This approval can be revoked in real time in the case of abuse, immediately terminating location access.   2) Every user must agree to share his/her location, a permission which can also be revoked (by that user) in real time. This permission is granted on an applicaton-by-application basis. After granting permission to share location, that user receives periodic reminders that s/he is locatable by that application.   There are many other details, but I hope that helps for now.   For more details, see: http://developer.veriplace.com/ Best, joel

Actually  the cellphone number  is anonymized when the data is released by the operator. However there remain some issues on privacy due the the release of the location position and time. Also there is the risk that an attacker might re-identify the data using a side information such as geo-referenced social network data .
