Answer:
As a racer, I like the following apps. You cruisers will probably like more of the chart, knot, and tide references listed here: http://theappwhisperer.com/2011/05/03/top-10-iphone-and-ipad-sailing-apps/ Sailflow developed an app for iOS and Android called WindAlert (Free), which is my favorite way to get up-to-the-minute weather data and forecasts in my area: http://itunes.apple.com/app/windalert/id317992025?mt=8 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.windalert.android US Sailing released a mobile version of the official Racing Rules of Sailing ($6), which would be great to have if you don't already own a paper copy http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-racing-rules-of-sailing/id358318663?mt=8 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.ussailing.racingrules Kattack ($10) is pretty awesome, if you're racing in an area with an active Kattack event. This iOS app replaces the Kattack onboard hardware. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/kattack-mobile/id451564266?mt=8 [Android coming soon] I might be interested to try some of the new tactician apps that are slowly being developed, although I doubt any of them could beat onboard instruments and a notepad. Something like Sailing Tactician (Free) that tracks speed, heading and location could be good for debrief, if nothing else. Navionics (already suggested above) is a good chart plotter, as long as your phone isn't in the sun where it will overheat. For monitoring my position at anchor, I like Drag Queen. It sound an alarm loud enough to wake you up if you position varies by more than a preset distance

Navionics Apps are better than most built in chartplotters. absolutely great. i supplement my navionics charts with an app called charts & tides which has free activecaptain data. other responses were good as well.

I use https://itunes.apple.com/app/spyglass/id332639548?mt=8&at=11lLc7&ct=fs on my iPhone for sailing. This is an amazing app to have on a boat. It works as a ship's compass, a bearing compass and sextant (without the math), as well as a GPS. It makes a great introduction to celestial navigation, and it is accurate enough to be a seriously useful tool. As far as I know it's for ios only and costs like 4 bucks. Totally worth it. Just don't forget to calibrate it from time to time.

I really like Marine Navigator, an Android app that uses raster charts. It has an excellent free version in which you can set one way point and a more complete pro version with routes.I repeat. FREE. SIMPLE. RELIABLE. FUNCTIONAL.
