Online web design courses?

What is the best place to take Adobe CS5-related web design courses online?

  • I'm looking for courses - ideally with tests and a diploma in the end - that some of our employees can follow when we don't have client projects for them. Any ideas?

  • Answer:

If you don't mind spending a little money for a subscription I would recommend http://www.lynda.com. The site has in depth tutorials for everything you can imagine. I'm not sure what the prices are now but whatever it may be its definitely worth every penny.

If you live near a public university or community college, you might look into their Continuing Education programs. CE courses can be very affordable and flexible, as well as narrowly focused, which means employees can take a day or two here and there to learn something useful (e.g. an InDesign class might meet for two 8 hour days, which is probably plenty of time for most people to learn the core concepts of an application). These types of classes usually add up to a certificate of some sort, rather than a degree. The paper itself will not be worth much but if one puts some effort into the learning process, it can still pay dividends in personal motivation and professional development. Edit: just noticed the "online" preference. CE programs do often have online options. They are not always as engaging (in my view) but they can still be useful and still involve some level of evaluation and accreditation.

Creativelive has some good video tutorials on CS6, and adobe has various video tutorials http://tv.adobe.com/ (both without the piece of paper). But sometime the best way to learn/expand your skills is to create something that your interested in, Google used to give all employees 20% of their working week to their own projects, there a good article here about it http://www.fastcompany.com/3015963/google-took-its-20-back-but-other-companies-are-making-employee-side-projects-work-for-them That sort of thing could be a greater benefit overall to the business in the long run, in letting them experiment and hack their own projects those innovations could then be used in the clients projects, better than any piece of paper.

I too agree. http://Lynda.com is a good resource for the money. I would also recommend the tutplus network, http://www.tutsplus.com, specifically activetuts. They have a wide range of tutorials from flash to Unity to audio to photoshop. They are literally the best free resource I have seen online.
