Can I read example statements for undergraduate students?

What's a good book to read with my ESL students next quarter?

  • I have adult ESL students, high-beginning and low-intermediate level. They are mostly from Mexico and Puerto Rico. I'd love to find a book that they could really relate to and get excited about reading. It also really helps if there's a good video to go along with it (but this isn't absolutely necessary). It's hard to find good literature for these students that's not too difficult. I know there are abridged versions of classics - is there a website that reviews these? Also, young adult or children's books that aren't too childish could be appropriate. I'm thinking of Esperanza Rising, for example. (I haven't read it, just keep seeing it on reading lists). Any reviews for me? Books you've used?

  • Answer:

I often start at http://edhelper.com/ and then search in their special ed section for high school aged, hi/lo books.  These are books written with high interest, low reading level and designed for kids with various reading disabilities who have similar problems as do ESL learners. Because they are designed for students, you can also set the reading level and highlight particular words in a passage for further vocabulary work.  It is in general a terrific starting place and I highly recommend it.  A lot of their stuff is free, but it is surely worth the low annual fee for the flexibility options offered with membership.
