How to fly from Naples, italy to Capri Island?

If I am visiting the Amalfi Coast (Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, and Capri), is is best to stay overnight in Naples, Pompeii, or Sorrento (or elsewhere?)

  • I plan to stay for 3 days and visit Pompeii/Vesuvius one day, Herculaneum or Capri one day, and Naples or Sorrento one day. I am leaning towards staying in Pompeii, but I am not sure if Napels or Sorrento would be better.

  • Answer:

Wow, a lot to cover in 3 days. You travel like me!  I would stay overnight in Sorrento with that itinerary because you can easily get to Capri and Pompeii from there. Sorrento is on the coast so you can enjoy the sea, which is after all why people come to the Amalfi Coast. If you have only 3 days, I would skip Herculaneum in favor of Pompeii. It would be great if on the way to Sorrento you spent at least a  morning in Naples, which I love, to see the national museum where the treasures of Pompeii are displayed. That will make your Pompeii experience so much richer. BTW, I have stayed in Pompeii and it's a sweet little town, but with such a tight schedule, I think Sorrento would work better for you.P.S. here's a Lonely Planet discussion on same topic. http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=2096757

Hello, I believe that it is important not to be victim of the idea the Naples is  the country of criminality. I was in LA, and life there is not more easy :) However, it is important to know that: - Sorrento is about 1h by train from Naples, and Pompei about 40' (you have to take, in both cases, you need to take Circumvesuviana, a railway that serves areas around Vesuvius). - Pompei is not safer than Naples, but it is a small town, mostly built around tourism an tourists need. Archeological area is one of the most visited in the world. It is beautiful, but if you want to live and walk through streets and homes, it is better to go to Ercolaneum area. - Ercolano is a small city, Archeological area is beautiful, and its castrum gives and idea of how ancient neapolitans lived. Around there, you can have a long walk to watch the golden mile. The ancient elite built there their villas, each of them has a private access to the sea. The neapolitan authoritiea have been woking for years to giove some villas their ancient beauties. - Naples is one of the most beautiful cities around the world. It has a great ancient centre (which stll preserves the roman castrum structure). You can find great or cheap hotel or b&b, and taste the unique neapolitan cuisine at a low price For all your visit, you can follow simple measures to avoid (as possibile) to be highlithed by criminals: - avoid to wear jewels and anything with a great value; - keep your bags always under control; - do not show your camera as a prize :) - do not move with too much money in your pocket, and so on If you need more specific information, ask me for it :) Have a great stay!

I'd suggest that you don't overly rush things. Italy is meant to be digested in small bites. I arrived at the Bay of Naples intending to stay for a day or two at most. Ended up mooching around there for 2 weeks. Napoli is a great place to visit, but I found staying at Sorrento to be much better. Better air, better scenery, and the Amalfi coast is just a short scooter ride away. To get maximum benefit from your trip, go in springtime and rent a scooter. Riding down the drop dead gorgeous Amalfi Coast with the warm Mediterranean wind in your face and stopping every so often to sample the local ice cream and food is an experience I highly recommend. From Amalfi it's just a short riding distance away to Pompeii and back to Sorrento. I leave you with some of the photos of my trip as an appetizer: Start at Sorrento and get confused by their road signs: Cut south across the peninsula and be greeted with this view: Ride down the coastal road and stop every five minutes to buy a slice of heavenly pizza or to admire the view: Celebrate your arrival at Amalfi with a plate of delicious pasta: Cut across the mountain roads and ride north to Pompeii. Note: There are areas in between where the ride isn't quite as majestic as the Amalfi coast, and is downright dangerous if you're an inexperienced rider, so it's a perfectly valid option to ride back to Sorrento and take the half-hour train ride to Pompeii. Ride back to Sorrento via the northern road. Celebrate with a delicious dinner,  a shot of the famous Sorrentini limoncello, and enjoy the view of the sunset over the Bay of Naples; the sight of the lights twinkling to life in distant Napoli and the looming presence of Vesuvio should be on everyone's bucket list. Bring lots of wine and pizza. It should be achievable within a day, though I'd recommend that you schedule at least three as that part of Italy is chock full of hidden delights and little alleys for you to explore. Gosh, it's been 10 years already?

The true beauty of Napoli and napolitans is the grit of the city. Yes it is dangerous, dirty, noisy, and crowded but I have encountered some of the friendliest people, most amazing restaurants, and deep cultural history. It all depends on the type of traveler you are. Just be careful and disappear in the chaos and you will be fine.

I think it actually depends when you are visiting, as Capri or Sorrento are best in summer for staying over night as in other moments there isn't really much to do. So I would say, stay in Naples if you are going soon, or otherwise Sorrento or Positano as they are pretty close to all the locations you want to visit!By the way, they are all amazing places and you will have a good time!

You should just go on a boat holiday with https://www.antlos.com/en/boat-holiday/castellammare-di-stabia-italy-sailing-in-sorrento-amalfi-coast-124, sleep on board and visit ALL of those locations at once while cruising the incredible turquoise waters! You'll see so much more, plus the watercaves and insane landscapes from the boat.

Hello, welcome to South Italy.I would recommend staying in Sorrento for 3 main reasons1)it s well connected with Pompeii and Caprii. Circumvesuviana (local transportation company) connects Sorrento with Pompei scavi (ruins). It will leave you right in front of entrance2) You can catch early morning ferry to Caprii for a day trip.3) Sorrento is safer than Pompeii and there are a lot of things to do in spring and summer (eating, clubbing, strolling). IPompei is a quite sleepy city (I have been living there for 25 years). In Winter also Sorrento is sleepy. If your vacation happens to be at beginning of the month bear in mind that entrance at ruins are free of charge the first Sunday of every month.Btw 3 days are not enough to see everything and you will skip Positano and Amalfi.Have a nice vacation.Ps I am blogging on tourism in Rome and Italy. If you like my project please subscribe and share my posts. This one is about Positanohttp://www.tastesofrome.com/blog/positano-at-your-feet/Thank you

This is an ambitious itinerary. Italy is best done in a leisurely fashion. You will either feel rushed or like you haven't been if you speed through. I would do Capri, Pompeii and Naples and cut the rest. Not that it's not worth seeing, but because it's just a lot. I actually LOVE Herculaneum, but if i had to choose between Pompeii and Herculaneum, I'd pick Pompeii just because there is more of it. Herculaneum is a completely different site though. Vesuvius is cool, but dumpable. Capri is incomparable.  If you want city, museums, food and real people, you've got to do Naples.I wouldn't stay in Naples - not because it's "bad" in anyway but because it's not centrally located. If you want to stay in one place, I'd pick Pompeii or Sorrento.

I'm napoletan and i think it would be better for you to stay overnight in sorrento(near piazza tasso) or Naples but don't book in piazza garibaldi, only near hotel vesuvio because this place is a best and quiet zone of Naples. If you would go to sorrento from Naples is too easy, look here for details http://www.sorrento-online.com/english/orari.htm
