Is Kayak a trustworthy site?

Is there a site that helps choose health insurance by consolidating options, like Kayak does for travel?

  • Answer:

Let me say upfront that I've not used Kayak, but... There are actually a number of sites and services where you can run quotes on individual health insurance policies from a number of carriers. Our own site (http://www.acforrest.com) will do that for people searching in the states where we are licensed (mostly in the Southeast). Most of these won't be perfect as not all insurance companies will publish their rates in these settings, but most of the larger companies do. Most of these sites will group plans by price and you'll see essential benefits like deductible, coinsurance, and whether the plan is HSA qualified, and they generally will quickly link you to plan summaries and brochures. You can look at http://GoHealth.com as an example on a national scale. The only word of caution is that some of these sites will then send your information on to licensed agents who will contact you. If the site asks for your phone number you will almost certainly get called, perhaps a lot. (Some agents run large call centers that get aggressive, others like us are smaller shops that try not to be a pain!) I hope this helps.

Yes, there are absolutely sites that exist. provided you with a couple of sites. http://ehealthinsurance.com and http://gohealthinsurance.com  are pretty decent and give results like Kayak. However, buying health insurance is a lot different than a buying a plane ticket - there are a lot more variables and so most of the sites out there just give you a rough price and then you have to sift through all the details. I haven't seen anything great out there that lets people look at the price and the details in an easy to view manner (yet!)

Our site, http://www.simplyinsured.com, allows you to compare quotes instantly and compare across different plans and insurance companies. We'll show the best plans in each price/value tier side-by-side so you can compare coverage levels. One word of advice, focus on premium costs vs. two coverage factors: the price of a doctor visit and the maximum out of pocket cost. Most brokers will focus you on deductibles, which can be misleading (you may have a $2,000 deductible and still end up with an out of pocket cost double that if you're hospitalized).

For businesses, check out http://Zenefits.com -- we pull in quotes for pretty much every major plan from every major insurance carrier in California.

Great answer from -- she's right, it's a lot more complicated than choosing a way to travel. At Maxwell Health our licensed (and unbiased - not compensated by commission for recommending certain plans) advisors are your resource to help you choose from the myriad options. Not everyone is in the same situation and thus using a quote engine can be dangerous. Give it a whirl -- http://www.maxwellhealth.com
