What can reduce a person's immune system?

Does paracetamol reduce the ability of immune system to fight with infection?

  • I would like to know if abnormally high temperature (fever) is a mean of the immune system to fight with an infection or it is a side effect. If it is the mean, then paracetamol should reduce the ability of immune system to suppress an infection. If a high temperature is a side effect then, I would like to know if paracetamol remove this side effect by reducing the intensity the immune system fight with the infection.

  • Answer:

We don't consider lowering fever to be bad for your body fighting off an infection. But, you don't need to treat fever as such, only take e.g. paracetamol if you have pain, e.g. muscle aches, head ache etc. Should your fever rise above 40Ëš C (104Ëš F) you should see a doc ASAP, since that's a lot more than just a cold, and then you should take something to lower the temperature.

The answer is not entirely clear yet, but if lowering the fever with medicine does affect the ability of your body to fight off infection, it affects it only mildly.  There have been a few studies that seemed to suggest that in the common cold or other URIs that duration of illness is slightly shorter if no fever-reducing medicines are used (paracetamol/acetaminophen, ibuprofen, aspirin, etc).  But you have to weigh that against the fact that these medicines relieve pain and make you more comfortable during the illness. This answer is not a substitute for professional medical advic...
