    The best fields for the future are the ones using consistent, repeatable and customer focused processes to manage the delivery of services to the business and end user. I would begin to get a grasp on how processes help technology to become more of an enabler of business activities and delivery of value to the end users. I would shy away from any field in IT that sees technology for the sake of technology to be the driving force. IT and business will eventually merge to become just the business (supported by technology) rather than distinct entities. So gear a career towards those areas that help you show customers and users how technology can help make their lives more effective, efficient and economical. These would include Service Desk, IT Service Management, Project Management, Business Analysis and Intelligence, Process Ownership or Process Management, Business Relationship Management or any role that bridges between the customer and IT.

All of them are prosperous if you know enough. Have a foundation - roughly what you've been taught in undergrad + maybe a masters (and don't skimp on the stuff you don't like as much!), and then excel at something else. Having effectively built a complicated piece of software, become an expert in algorithms, or being an expert hacker in some language can all be great assets - at the very least they demonstrate your hard work and intelligence. More specifically, I feel that anything dealing with distributed systems will continue to be big. Server and database stuff fall under this, as do algorithmic implementations. There's a big pipeline of knowledge required to implement these systems - know one part of the pipeline very well and know adjacent parts decently too.
